Meet Amy and CarterSmartHouse


Amy Smart and Carter Oosterhouse met and fell in love over their commitment to the environment. Amy, a well-known actress  (Varsity Blues, Just Friends, The Butterfly Effect and Felicity), has been actively involved with environmental issues since she was 18yrs old, volunteering with Heal the Bay, and then serving on their board along with Environmental Media Association for the last 17 years, which is where she met her husband. Carter Oosterhouse is one of America’s most recognized lifestyle experts (TLC’s Trading Spaces, ABC’s Great Christmas Light Fight) and his unique style and taste has given way to numerous startups and philanthropic businesses including his winery in Traverse City and non-profit, Carter’s Kids, that builds playgrounds around the country.  An authority in eco-living, Carter has a history of gently leading viewers to greener pastures by creating manageable steps to an eco-friendly lifestyle. SmartHouse was born from Carter and Amy’s passion for the environment and their desire to give conscious minds, conscious choices, when it comes to products the purchase. 10% of the profits from the SmartHouse eyewear will be donated to Vision to Learn in hopes to give more children access to free eye exams and eyeglasses.

Unfortunately, in low-income communities across the country, 95% of kids who need glasses, about 2,000,000 in total, do not have them. What chance does each of these children have to succeed in school, let alone break free from poverty?

Vision To Learn was founded to make sure every child has the glasses he or she needs to succeed in school and in life. Its mobile clinics solve the problem by bringing eye exams and glasses, free of charge, to children at schools in low-income communities.
